The House of the Garden Hercules in Pompeii was named after a small statue of the mythical hero Hercules in the garden of this private residence. Most plants that grew in the garden could be used for the production of perfumes and fragrant oils. Therefore the house is also often referred to as the House of Perfume. 

The bergamot and juniper berries become full-bodied on a carpet of incense, fading into the persistent suggestion of oriental woods.

The presence of a marble Hercules in the garden of the perfumer's house, triumph of courage and immortality, elevates Agatho's creations to myth and the Giardinodiercole becomes a perfume.
